Vanini's Journey: Who Goes to the Heart of Cocoa

The ICAM company, through the premium brand Vanini, offers products aimed at those looking for excellent quality in chocolate, innovative recipes and that embrace the values ​​of sustainability.

The cocoa used for Vanini products comes directly from the countries of origin, from selected cooperatives of growers with whom the company boasts long-term collaboration relationships. Together with them there is the commitment to respect the natural cycles of an integrated and always sustainable supply chain towards people and the environment.

It is from this vision that Vanini bars are born, made with single-origin cocoa from Peru and Uganda, where the company is present to guarantee, in addition to the quality of the raw material, also training and fair working conditions for the farmers.

Projects that best express the values ​​that the ICAM company has embraced for over 75 years and enhance the ever-increasing attention of consumers towards organic, healthy and natural products.

Our commitment in the Countries of Origin: Uganda and Bagua

In 2010 we founded ICAM CHOCOLATE UGANDA Ltd to create an important development project in Uganda, exporting our wealth of knowledge and experience to the heart of Africa.

The project was divided into two different interventions: training on modern agronomic techniques and the sharing of experiences and best practices, developed in over 30 years of collaboration with the campesinos of Central America, and
the creation of an organized collection and processing center. In particular, we have consolidated our method by collaborating with the communities and local growers of the Bundibugyo district, where direct control has allowed us to enhance the intrinsic quality of this high-altitude cocoa, processing it fresh in the new collection center.

Our first cocoa processing center was built, harvested from local farmers, with offices, fermentation and cocoa drying areas.

From the great attention to the needs of consumers, increasingly committed to adopting virtuous and conscious consumer choices, and with the aim of creating a sustainable product in every part, we started from the Vanini Uganda BIO bars, implementing the first compostable packaging made using a patented biopolymer composed of vegetal substances, such as corn starch. The packaging of these Uganda Vanini bars is composed of 80% renewable raw materials and is 100% compostable, according to the rules of industrial disposal (certified by the TUV body).

Another project we have developed with pride dates back to the plantations of the Peruvian Bagua area, in the Amazon: a wild territory rich in unexplored areas that still reveals many of its hidden treasures today; among these the “Bagua” cocoa, from the region of the same name, the oldest in the world, cultivated already in 3,000 BC by the Mayo-Chincipe culture who used it to make drinks well before the Maya and the Olmecs.

In this geographical area with resources that are still not fully known, Vanini is the spokesperson for a research and selection project of the best single-origin cocoa clones. With a specific and structured project for the production of sustainable chocolate, Vanini aims to identify the most productive cocoa genotypes, those most resistant to bacteria and epidemics, and those that can guarantee excellent taste and sensory characteristics of chocolate.

Vanini is the first chocolate bar producer in Italy to propose a new, all-digital way of enjoying the product, designed to bring consumers closer to the protagonists of the cocoa supply chain. Thanks to the new packaging of the Vanini Single Origin Perù Bars, which provides access to an Augmented Reality experience, you can immerse yourself directly in the cocoa crops: simply frame the QR code with your smartphone, move it and access different sections.
In one of these, thanks to instant tracking that allows you to anchor a 3D content to a point in space and manipulate it by rotating and enlarging it, you can plant a cocoa bean in your environment and follow, step by step, the growth of the tree, from the birth of the first shoot to the harvesting of its fruits, up to the harvesting process and drying of the beans. To complete the experience, there is also geolocalization, to be able to virtually approach such a distant land.

In this way, the cocoa supply chain is transformed into a dynamic and fun, as well as interactive and immersive, discovery journey, perfect for accompanying adults and children in the exploration of the world from which the much-loved food that is chocolate comes.
